DESCENDANTS OF CYNTHIA KENT BENTLEY

CYNTHIA KENT (BENTLEY), daughter of Major James Randal Kent* and Mary Cloyd Kent, was born July 16, 1820, Montgomery County, Va. Her father was a prominent citizen of Montgomery County and the largest antebellum landowner in Southwest Virginia. Kentland, the family home, is still standing, and the farm is now part of Virginia Tech’s Agriculture College in Blacksburg, Va. James Randal Kent was a founder of the Preston and Olin Institute, a Methodist school, that was the predecessor of Virginia Tech University. He was an ardent supporter of the Confederacy, supplying the Confederate Army with provisions up to the day General Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Cynthia was educated at the Liberty Female Academy in Liberty, (now Bedford) Va., where she met and married Dr. Henry Moss Bentley on March 14, 1837. He, the son of William [Weldon] Bentley and his wife Lucy Gaines Turpin Bentley, was born in Powhatan County, Va. on April 24, 1806. His father, Colonel William Bentley, served under George Washington in the Revolutionary War, was a charter member of the Society of Cincinnati and represented Powhatan in the Virginia General Assembly. His mother, Lucy Turpin Bentley, daughter of Thomas Turpin and Martha Ward Gaines Turpin, was a first cousin of Thomas Jefferson. Dr. Bentley graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School in 1831. His medical kit is now in the possession of the University of Virginia Medical School. Weldon, the family home in Pulaski County, Va, was built in the 1840s on land given to Cynthia by her uncle, Gordon Cloyd, and her father, James Randal Kent. Dr. Bentley died on December 18, 1848, while visiting his family in Powhatan County, Va and is buried there. He was an eminent physician, a polished gentleman, and as such highly esteemed. Cynthia Bentley held her family and estate together through the Civil War and reconstruction until her death on December 7, 1883 in Pulaski, Va. She is buried at Kentland in Montgomery County, Virginia.

William Weldon Bentley, son of Dr. Henry Moss Bentley and Cynthia Kent Bentley, was born June 27, 1839, Pulaski County, Va. When he was a student at Virginia Military Institute, he received instruction from Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson, who was then a member of the faculty. While a cadet at VMI, William Bentley was called to Harper’s Ferry to maintain order at the execution of John Brown. He graduated from VMI and joined the Confederate Army at the outbreak of the war. He participated in Pickett’s Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg, taking command of the brigade when all officers senior to him had been killed or wounded. He was paroled at Appomattox. On June 18, 1877 he married Sarah Parke Poindexter Perkins. She, the daughter of Thomas F. Perkins and Eliza, nee Poindexter, was born in Buckingham County, Va. on January 24, 1849. After the war Major Bentley retired to the family farm at Weldon until it was sold in 1911. He then moved to Richmond, Va, where he served as the fifteenth President of the Society of Cincinnati for the state of Virginia. He died on July 23, 1924 and is buried at Riverview Cemetery in Richmond. His wife lived in Richmond until her death on October 28, 1944. She is also buried at Riverview Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.

Sarah Parke Archer Bentley, daughter of William & Parke Bentley was born June 20, 1878, Pulaski County, Va. She was educated at the State Female Normal School (now Longwood University) in Farmville, Va. She lived in Richmond, Virginia and died there on November 22, 1953. She is buried with her parents at Riverview Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.

James [Randall] Kent Bentley, son of Dr. Henry Moss Bentley and Cynthia Kent Bentley, was born November 20, 1841, Pulaski County, Va. at the conclusion He attended Virginia Military Institute and served in the Confederate Army. At the conclusion of the war, he returned to Pulaski County, Va, where he was a farmer and stockbreeder. He married Sidney Graham Hanson on February 25, 1868. She, the daughter of William W. Hanson and Catherine Agnes Graham Hanson, was born on July 7, 1847 in Tazewell County, Va. She lived briefly in Smythe County, Va and was raised in Wytheville, Va, where she attended Wytheville Female College. James Randall Kent Bentley was an excellent horseman. It is said he would ride his horse at a full gallop down the main street of New Bern, Va, picking his hat up off the ground without missing a step. The family lived in Pulaski County, Va. There were 10 children. Sidney died on August 15, 1891 and is buried at the New Dublin Presbyterian Cemetery. He died on March 1, 1907 and is also buried at the New Dublin Presbyterian Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia.

Henry Moss Bentley, son of James Randall Kent & Sidney Bentley, was born November 9, 1870, Pulaski County, Va and died on March 24, 1871. He is buried at the New Dublin Presbyterian Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia.

George Hanson Bentley, son of James Randall Kent & Sidney Bentley, was born July 27, 1873, Pulaski County, Va. A Captain in the Virginia Volunteers during the Philippine Insurrection, he died from wounds received at Luzon on August 26, 1900. His body was brought home, and he is buried at the New Dublin Presbyterian Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia.

Cynthia Kent Bentley (Cushing), daughter of James Randall Kent & Sidney Bentley was born August 9, 1875, Pulaski County, Va. She married Dr. Wilson Reynolds Cushing in Dublin, Va on October 7, 1896. She died in childbirth on May 26, 1905 and is buried at the New Dublin Presbyterian Cemetery, Dublin, Va. “Doc Cushing” raised his wife’s two youngest siblings, Randall and Lucy Bentley, and ministered to the residents of Dublin from his office on Church Street until his death on October 6, 1938. He is also buried at the New Dublin Presbyterian Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia.

Katherine Graham (Kit) Bentley (Eckman), daughter of James Randall Kent & Sidney Bentley, was born July 3, 1877, Pulaski County, Va. She married Joseph Eckman on November 25, 1902 in Pulaski, Va. Following her husband’s death in 1917, Kit lived in New York, Chicago and Pulaski, Va, where she died on June 16, 1958. She is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Pulaski, Virginia

Elizabeth Hensel Eckman, daughter of Joseph & Katherine Eckman, was born January 21, 1904, Pulaski County, Va. She married Frank Aloyius Kennedy of Chicago, Il on October 23, 1925 in Pulaski, Va. She and her husband divorced in 1938. She died on July 2, 1951 and is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Pulaski, Virginia.

Bentley Francis Kennedy, son of Frank & Elizabeth Kennedy, was born December 10, 1928, Greenville, SC. After his parents divorced, Bentley lived with his father’s sister in Danville, Il. He joined his father in California @ 1942 where he attended military school. He later served in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He was an officer for a savings and loan institution and died on May 25, 1994 in Los Angeles, Ca. He is buried with his father at the Resurrection Cemetery in Danville, Illinois.

Cynthia Cushing Eckman (Kendall), daughter of Joseph & Katherine Eckman, was born June 18, 1905, Pulaski County, Va. She married Harry Brookes Kendall of Louisville, Ky at the Little Church Around the Corner in New York City on February 18, 1925. Cynthia died on July 26, 1939 in Evanston, Il. She is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Pulaski, Virginia.

Josephine Eckman, daughter of Joseph & Katherine Eckman, was born March 7, 1915, Pulaski County, Va. She died on September 27, 1915 and is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Pulaski, Virginia.

William Weldon Bentley, son of James Randall Kent & Sidney Bentley and twin of Margaret Elizabeth Bentley Sampson, was born April 4, 1880, Pulaski County, Va. He married Annie Elizabeth Faris on November 26, 1907 in Bluefield, WV. He was the owner of the Crystal Stream Laundry in Bluefield where he died of a heart attack on February 1, 1911. He is buried at Maple Park Cemetery in Bluefield, West Virginia.

Sidney Hanson Bentley (Buswell), daughter of William & Annie Bentley, was born July 27, 1909, Bluefield, WV She married Walker Buswell in Richmond, Va, where they lived. She died in Richmond on October 7, 1993 and is buried at Ware Church Cemetery in Gloucester, Virginia.

Elizabeth Faris (Billie) Bentley, daughter of William & Annie Bentley, was born July 8, 1910, Bluefield, WV. She died on June 14, 1919 in Louisville, Ky. and is buried with her father at Maple Park Cemetery in Bluefield, West Virginia.

Margaret Elizabeth Bentley (Sampson), daughter of James Randall Kent & Sidney Bentley and twin of William Weldon Bentley, was born April 4, 1880, Pulaski County, Va. She was educated at the Bedford Academy in Bedford, Va. and married William Sampson of Middlesboro, Ky on October 25, 1905 at the First Presbyterian Church in Dublin, Va. They met at the home of her uncle Wilbur Fisk Nicholson, who lived in Middleboro, Ky. Her husband first practiced law with his father in Middlesboro, where all four children were born. In 1920 the family moved to Harlan, Ky, where a branch office of the firm, Sampson & Sampson, had been established earlier by a brother. William Sampson died on December 10, 1942. Elizabeth died on January 31,1946. They are buried at Rest haven Cemetery in Harlan, Kentucky.

Margaret Elizabeth (Wiz) Sampson (Matthews), daughter of William & Elizabeth Sampson, was born March 25, 1907, Middlesboro, Ky. She attended Hollins College in Virginia and the University of Kentucky. She taught school in Harlan, Ky before marrying Armstrong Robertson (Army) Matthews on June 10, 1937 at the First Presbyterian Church in Harlan. He was born May 8, 1902 in Nashville, Tn, attended Vanderbilt University, and graduated from Le High University. He was President of Consolidated Coal Company when he died on April 2, 1960 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Wiz divided her time between Bluefield WV and Pittsburgh, Pa, where she died on November 17, 1995. Both are buried at Monte Vista Cemetery in Bluefield, West Virginia.

Elizabeth Bentley (Bess) Matthews (Robinson), daughter of Armstrong & Elizabeth Matthews, was born October 30, 1947, Bluefield, WV. After graduating from Vanderbilt University, Bess taught and practiced nursing at the University of Pittsburgh, in Pittsburgh, Pa, Rush University in Chicago, Il, the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Oh and Pace University in White Plains, NY. She married John Bernard (Bernie) Robinson on January 15, 1975 in Pittsburgh, Pa. Bess coauthored a book on continuing nursing education, co-founded a successful spouse abuse program, served on the vestry of Christ Church in Bronxville, NY, and lovingly devoted her many talents to enhancing the lives of her immediate and extended family. The family lived in Northern Kentucky, Bronxville, NY, and Lausanne, Switzerland before settling in Great Falls, Va, where Bess died on September 9, 1998. She is buried with her mother and father at Monte Vista Cemetery in Bluefield, West Virginia.

William Bentley Sampson, son of William & Elizabeth Sampson, was born June19, 1909, Middlesboro, Ky. He attended VMI and graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1934. He served in the US Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. During his civilian career, Bentley held executive positions with International Harvester and Westclox Division of General Time. He married Ethel Margaret Vogt on July 6, 1940 in Chicago Il. She was born March 20, 1915 in Chicago. He and his wife lived in Aurora, Il, where their three daughters were born. The family then moved to Peru, Il until 1972 when he retired and they moved to Harlingen, Tx. He died there on June 13, 1985. His wife lived in Harlingen several more years before moving to Kansas City Mo, where she died on January 3, 2006, a few months before her 91st birthday. His ashes are buried with her at East Slope Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri.

Randall Kent Sampson, son of William and Elizabeth Sampson, was born April 9, 1912, Middlesboro, Ky. He graduated cum laude from Vanderbilt University and, after attending the University of Louisville Law School, was licensed to practice law on April 23, 1935. Kent married Rose Arnett Miller at the home of her aunt, Mrs. R. H. Cornett in Pineville, Ky on February 22, 1940. Rose was born January 13, 1916 in Barbourville, Ky and was a graduate of Union College in Barbourville. Kent served in the US Navy during World War II and was a member of the law firm of Sampson & Sampson in Harlan, Ky, where all four of their children were born. He was the fourth continuous generation of the Sampson family in the legal profession. Three generations practiced law under the name of Sampson & Sampson over a period of more than fifty years. He died on June 2, 1958 in Harlan. His wife later married Roy Wythal Dickenson and continued to live in Harlan, where she died on January 12, 1995. She and Kent are buried at Resthaven Cemetery in Harlan, Kentucky.

Virginia Cravens (Peach) Sampson (Carter), daughter of William & Elizabeth Sampson, was born February 6, 1915, Middlesboro, Ky. She attended William and Mary College in Virginia and graduated from Converse College, in South Carolina. On February 16, 1939 she married John Howard (Chick) Carter at the Episcopal Church in Harlan, Ky. He was born September 10, 1908, also in Harlan. Peach was a gifted poet and in 1964 compiled the first edition of My Family, The Sampsons. The Carters lived in Dunedin, Fl, where she died on February 25, 1996. He died on December 29, 1980, also at Dunedin.

James Randall Kent Bentley, son of James Randall Kent & Sidney Bentley, was born 16 November 16, 1884, Pulaski County, Va. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and married Dulcie Bettie Still of Carlisle, Pa on November 20, 1906.They met at the home of her uncle, Doctor Wilson Cushing, in Dublin. Va. The family lived in Dublin, where he operated the Dublin Hardware Store. At one time he had the first and only gas pump in town. He died on March 2, 1941 in Dublin, Va. She died on July 8, 1976 also in Dublin. Both are buried at the New Dublin Presbyterian Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia.

George Hanson Bentley, son of James Randall Kent & Dulcie Bentley, was born December 22, 1907, Dublin, Va. After graduating from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, he was a civil engineer for the Appalachian Power Company and the American Electric Company. His work of building bridges took him all over the United States. He married Hulah Fudge Lloyd in August of 1938 and retired to Sun City, Arizona, where he died on November 19, 1988.

Virginia Kent Bentley (Cecil), daughter of James Randall Kent & Dulcie Bentley, was born January 23, 1911, Dublin, Va. She graduated from Flora MacDonald College (now St. Andrews University) in Laurinburg, NC and was an accomplished musician. In September of 1947, she married Charles Maxwell Cecil at the First Presbyterian Church in Dublin, Va. The family lived in Dublin where their son was born. She died on August 24, 1966 in Dublin. He died on August 31, 1958 also in Dublin. Both are buried at the
New Dublin Presbyterian Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia.

Sydney Graham Bentley (Davie), daughter of James Randall Kent & Dulcie Bentley, was born October 8, 1915, Dublin, Va. She married Charles James Davie on November 20, 1947 at the First Presbyterian Church in Dublin. He was from New York and served with the Marines in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. After the war he was employed by Duke & Duke in Pulaski, Va. The family lived in Dublin, Va, where their two daughters were born. He died on March 8, 1990 and is buried at the New Dublin Presbyterian Cemetery Dublin, Va. Sydney continued to live in Dublin and was known for her artistry in needlework. She died at the home of eldest daughter in Tupelo, Ms on October 21, 2014 a few weeks after her 99th birthday and is buried at the New Dublin Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia.

Dulcie Cushing Bentley (Dabbs), daughter of James Randall Kent & Dulcie Bentley, was born October 7, 1919, Dublin, Va. She married David Prudd Dabbs on February 4, 1944. She later followed a secretarial career and died on June 14, 1983 in Shannon, Ms. She is buried at the New Dublin Presbyterian Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia.

James Randall Kent Bentley, son of James Randall Kent & Dulcie Bentley, was born January 18, 1921, Dublin, Va. He graduated from Oak Ridge Military Academy in Kernersville, NC and was a Staff Sergeant, US Army, serving under General George S. Patton during World War II. He was awarded a Purple Heart and died on November 29, 1944 while fighting in Germany. His body was brought home, and he was buried on March 25, 1945 at the New Dublin Presbyterian Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia.

Thomas Hanson Bentley, son of James Randall Kent & Sidney Bentley, was born April 27, 1887 and died on August 12, 1887 in Pulaski County, Va. He is buried at the New Dublin Presbyterian Cemetery, Dublin, Virginia. Lucy Otey (Luce) Bentley (Glendy), daughter of James Randall Kent & Sidney Bentley, was born August 14, 1888, Pulaski County, Va. She married Cloyd Darst Glendy on October 5, 1922 at the First Presbyterian Church in Dublin, Va. They lived in Dublin where he was a banker. He died on October 1, 1956. She died on September 1, 1963. They are buried at the New Dublin Presbyterian Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia.

Mary Cloyd Bentley (Nicholson), daughter of Dr. Henry Moss Bentley and Cynthia Kent Bentley was born December 21, 1843, Pulaski County, Va. She married Capt. Wilbur Fisk Nicholson on February 26, 1868. He, the son of Isaac R. Nicholson and America, nee Gilmer, was born in Clinton, Ms on September 19, 1839. He attended Virginia Military Institute and was a Captain in the Confederate Army (Louisiana Regiment). After the war he was a farmer in Pulaski County, Va. and then relocated to Middlesboro, Ky, where he was in the President of a coal company. She died on July 19, 1916. He died on November 24, 1916. Both are buried at the Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Mary Kent (Mamie) Nicholson (Massie), daughter of Wilbur & Mary Nicholson, was born December 20, 1869, Pulaski County, Va. She was a graduate of Plummer College in Wytheville, Va and married Thornton Lemmon. Massie on January 19, 1889. The family lived in Pulaski, Va, where she died on July 7, 1939. Judge Massie was killed in the shootout at the Floyd County Courthouse in Hillsville, Va on March 14, 1912. Both are buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Pulaski, Virginia.

Patrick Cabell Massie, son of Thornton & Mary Massie, was born November 2, 1890, Pulaski County, Va. He married Lewis Bentley Stearnes on April 4, 1914. He was a farmer and businessman in Pulaski, Va, where the family lived at Buena Vista Farm. He died on August 25, 1944. She died on March 5, 1971. Both are buried at Thorn Spring Cemetery in Pulaski, Virginia.

Thomas Cabell Massie, son of Cabell & Lewis Massie, was born February 11, 1923, Pulaski County, Va. He married Agnes Louise McNeely in 1942. The family lived in Pulaski, Va. & Cayce, SC, where he died on July 15, 1983. He is buried at Thorn Spring Cemetery in Pulaski, Virginia.

Mary Bentley Massie (Tice & McKee), daughter of Thornton & Mary Massie, was born May 28, 1893, Pulaski County, Va. She was educated at the Virginia Female Institute (now Stuart Hall) and Hollins College. She married 1st Henry Keesaker Tice on October 8, 1913 and 2nd William Crooks McKee on February 2, 1922. She died on June 27, 1952 in Pulaski Va. and is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Pulaski. Va.

Thornton Massie Tice, son of Henry & Mary Tice, was born October 8, 1914, Roanoke, Va. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He married 1st Jennie Lou Loughan & 2nd Margaret Jenkins. He was a journalist for newspapers in Pulaski, Roanoke, Baltimore and Richmond, Va. He died on February 17, 1965 in Ashland, Ky and is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Pulaski, Virginia.

Thornton Massie Tice, son of Thornton & Margaret Tice, Jr., was born February 21, 1945 and died on May 25, 2016.

Withers Lendrum Tice, son of Thornton & Margaret Tice, was born February 21, 1950 and died on February 24, 1950.

Susan Carrington Tice, daughter of Thornton & Margaret Tice, was born and died in 1952.

Mary Bentley McKee, daughter of William & Mary McKee, was born May 10, 1923, Pulaski County, Va. She died on August 23, 1990 and is buried at Machpelah Cemetery in Weston, West Virginia.

Wilbur Nicholson Massie, son of Thornton & Mary Massie, was born May 23, 1895, Pulaski County, Va. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute and married Anna McDannold Pierce on May14, 1922. The family lived in Virginia Beach, Va. His wife died in August 1971. He died on January 13, 1976. Both are buried at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg, Virginia.

Wilbur Nicholson Massie, Jr. son of Wilbur & Anna Massie, was born April 20, 1923. He married Sara Frances Smith in October of 1957. He died on May 24, 1981 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Julia Baird Massie, daughter of Wilbur & Anna Massie, was born January 24, 1927. She died on March 23, 1948 and is buried at Christiansburg, Virginia.

Thornton Lemmon Massie, son of Thornton & Mary Massie, was born April 18, 1896, Pulaski County, Va. He died on September 12, 1896 in Pulaski, County. Virginia.

Eugene Pendleton (Penn) Nicholson, son of Wilbur & Mary Nicholson, was born April 27, 1872, Pulaski County, Va. He married Jessamine Rhorer on July 21, 1902 in Middlesboro, Ky. He was a lawyer in Middlesboro, where the family lived. He died on March 31, 1939 in Middlesboro. She died on October15, 1978 (9 days after her 100th birthday) also in Middlesboro. They are buried at the Middlesboro Cemetery in Middlesboro, Kentucky.

Eugene Pendleton (Gene) Nicholson Jr., son of Penn & Jesse Nicholson, was born January 17, 1904, Middlesboro, Ky. He married Laura Jane Gunn on October 11, 1930. The family lived in Middlesboro, Ky, where he practiced law. He died on April 3, 1977. She died on March 25, 1969. Both are buried at the Middlesboro Cemetery in Middlesboro, Kentucky.

David Cloyd Nicholson, son of Gene & Laura Nicholson, was born August 31, 1941, Middlesboro, Ky. He was a lawyer in Atlanta, Georgia, where he died on March 29, 1999.

William Bentley (Wick) Nicholson, son of Wilbur & Mary Nicholson, was born November 9, 1873, Pulaski County, Va. He was a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and an accomplished musician and tenor. He married Leona Florence Fischer on April 28, 1898 in New Orleans, La. She was a renowned Sophie Newcomb College potter. They lived in New Orleans where he died on March 15, 1927. She died in 1966, also in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Katherine (Kate) Wilbur Nicholson (Heinrich), daughter of Wilbur & Mary Nicholson, was born December 13, 1875, Pulaski, County, Va. She was educated at the Virginia Female Institute (now Stuart Hall) in Staunton, Va. She married Carl Rudolph Heinrich on November 7, 1905. He was a druggist in Knoxville, Tn ,where the family lived. He died on June 2, 1941. She died on November 28, 1953. They are both buried at Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Carl Rudolph Heinrich, Jr., son of Kate & Carl Heinrich, was born February 4, 1906, Knoxville, Tn. He married Eunice Gorman on July 30, 1929. He was a pharmacist in Knoxville, where the family lived. She died on August 15, 1968. He died on September 21, 1976. They are buried at Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Carl Rudolph Heinrich III, son of Carl & Eunice Heinrich, was born December 16, 1934, Knoxville, Tn. He died in Houston, Texas on September 3, 2004.

Herbert Kent Heinrich, son of Carl & Kate Heinrich, was born January 20, 1913, Knoxville, Tn. He married Alice Kathleen West on November 6, 1948. They lived in Knoxville, where she died on November 16, 1982. He died on August 6, 1984. They are buried at Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Lucy Hart Nicholson (Woodbury), daughter of Wilbur & Mary Nicholson, was born December 29, 1878, Pulaski County, Va. She was educated at the Virginia Female Institute, (now Stuart Hall) in Staunton, Va and married William Nicholl Woodbury on April 18,1907 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Middlesboro, Ky. He was a Yale graduate and a noted structural engineer. The family lived in Birmingham, Alabama, where she died on October 4, 1952.

Katherine Wilbur Woodbury (Williams), daughter of William & Lucy Woodbury, was born March 21, 1908, Pulaski County, Va. She was educated at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Ga and married Jack Williams on June 28, 1958. She died on October 22, 2001 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Lucile Woodbury (Ranck), daughter of William & Lucy Woodbury, was born May 16,1911, Roanoke, Va. She was educated at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta. Ga and married Joseph Reisner Ranck on October 2, 1937. The family lived in several locations around the world, settling in Atlanta, Ga when he retired from the military. He was a Brigadier General, US Army, when he died in Atlanta in 1976. She died on September 6, 2011 at the age of 100 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Wilbur Frederick Nicholson, son of Wilbur & Mary Nicholson, was born October 29, 1879, Pulaski County, Va. He died on May 31, 1880 in Pulaski County, Virginia.

Roselle Nicholson, daughter of Wilbur & Mary Nicholson, was born August 17, 1881, Pulaski County, Va. She died on September 15, 1881 in Pulaski County, Virginia.

Clara Nicholson, daughter of Wilbur & Mary Nicholson was born September 30, 1882, Pulaski County, Va. She died on October 16, 1882 in Pulaski County, Virginia.

Harry Gilmer Nicholson, son of Wilbur & Mary Nicholson, was born January 13, 1886, Pulaski County, Va. He married Margaret Anne Fulkerson on October 11, 1906. He was Vice President of a bank in Roanoke, Va, where he died on March 23, 1957.

Lucy Gaines Bentley (Hart), daughter of Dr. Henry Moss Bentley and Cynthia Kent Bentley, was born January 24, 1846, Pulaski County, Va. She married William Thomas Hart on November 4, 1863. He, the son of James Brock Hart and Maria Collier Hart, was born in Green County, Ga. June 21, 1840. He was a mining engineer and served in the Confederate Army. He later went west to investigate mining opportunities. Despondent over failed mining ventures, he took his life on February 16, 1901 by jumping from the Cannon Ball Train as it crossed the Snake River near Huntington, Idaho. Lucy raised her children at Union Point, Ga. She died at the home of her daughter, Cynthia Hart Chappell, on December 4, 1907 and is buried at Linwood Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia.

Henry Bentley Hart, son of William & Lucy Hart, was born January 25, 1868, Pulaski County, Va. He married Mary Frazier on June 18, 1902 and died on October 11, 1915. He is buried in Union Point, Georgia.

Virginia Collier Hart (Tate), daughter of William & Lucy Hart, was born March 27, 1870, Pulaski County, Va. She married Dr. William Byrd Tate on March 11, 1903. The family lived in Pickens County, Georgia. He died on January 6, 1916. She died on May 30, 1961. They are buried in Marietta, Georgia.

Mary Byrd Tate (McNeel), daughter of Dr. William & Virginia Tate, was born December 15, 1903, Pickens County, Georgia. She married Frank McNeel and died on August 25, 1960. She is buried in Pickens County, Georgia.

Ada Byrd McNeel (Gregory & Bird), daughter of Frank\ & Mary McNeel, was born September 13, 1923. She\ married 1st Paul Anthony Gregory, Jr. & 2nd Glenn Jerome Bird. She died on March 14, 1990 in Marietta,\ Georgia.

Lucy Bentley Tate, daughter of Dr. William & Virginia Tate, was born October 2, 1906, Pickens County, Georgia. She died on December 2, 1984 in Marietta, Georgia, where she is buried.

William Byrd Tate Jr., son of Dr. William & Virginia Tate, was born September 20, 1911, Pickens County, Georgia. He married Dorothy (Dottie) Brooks on December 15, 1937 and died on January 20, 1983 in Pickens County, Georgia. She died on February 14, 2008.

Virginia (Jennie) Kent Tate (Anderson), daughter of Dr. William & Virginia Tate and twin of John Hart Tate, was born September 22, 1912, Pickens County, Georgia. She was a graduate of Emory University and married James Thomas Anderson Jr. in Marietta, Ga on December 26, 1939. She was a life-long community activist, co-founder of the Cobb Landmarks & Historical Society and a past president of the Garden Club of Georgia. She died on January 20, 1985 in Marietta, Georgia. Her husband died on October 6, 1991 also in Marietta where they are buried at Mountain View Cemetery.

James Thomas (Tommy) Anderson III, son of James & Virginia Anderson, was born February 8, 1941. He married Melinda Griffith. The family lived in Marietta, Georgia where he died on February 3, 2004. He is buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Marietta, Georgia.

Randall (Randy) Montgomery Anderson, son of James & Virginia Anderson, was born October 14,1946, Atlanta, Ga. He married 1st Jane Hindman, 2nd Karen McKinnon, & 3rd Susan Gayle Stuebing. He was a graduate of Vanderbilt University, retired from the US Navy as a Lt. Colonel and was a pilot for Eastern Airlines and US Airways. He died on December 4, 2007 in Rome, Georgia and is buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Marietta, Georgia.

John Hart Tate, son of Dr. William &Virginia Tate and twin of Virginia Kent Tate, was born September 22, 1912, Pickens County, Georgia. He married 1st Lucille Brett & 2nd Katherine Wilder. He was a Captain in the US Air Force, serving in WW II and Korea. He died on June 24,1973 in Marietta, Georgia.

Cynthia Kent Hart (Chappell), daughter of William & Lucy Hart, was born November 11, 1872, Pulaski County, Va. She married Lucius Henry Chappell on October 28, 1891. He was twice elected Mayor of Columbus, Ga, where he died in 1928. She died on July 22, 1948. They are both buried at Linwood Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia.

Bentley Hart Chappell, son of Lucius & Cynthia Chappell, was born October 3, 1892, Columbus, Ga. He served in WW I and married Blanche Bush on September 28, 1920. He died on March 3, 1968 in Columbus, Georgia. She died on December 2, 1989 also in Columbus. They are buried at Linwood Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia.

Loretto Lamar Chappell, daughter of Lucius & Cynthia Chappell, was born March 22, 1895, Columbus, Ga. She was a graduate of The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr Pa and The Library School (later part of Emory University) in Atlanta, Ga. During her 46-year career as a librarian in Columbus, Ga, she was named the City Librarian in 1942. She was considered an authority on the works of Sidney Lanier, the history of Chattahoochee Valley, and the genealogy of Western Georgia. She died on October 6, 1987 in Columbus, Georgia, where she is buried at Linwood Cemetery.

Lucy Kent Chappell (Clarkson), daughter of Lucius & Cynthia Chappell, was born October 12, 1897, Columbus, Ga. She married Percy William Clarkson on November 23, 1920. He served in both WW I and WW II and was Deputy Commanding General for the US Army Pacific, 1950- 1954. He retired as a Major General in the US Army and died on September 14, 1962. She died on August 11, 1966. Both are buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.

Virginia Collier Chappell (Burress), daughter of Lucius & Cynthia Chappell, was born January 1, 1900, Columbus, Ga. She married Withers Alexander Burress on November 15, 1922. He was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute, served in both WW WW I & WW II. He retired as a Major General from the US Army and died on June 13, 1977. She died on November 10, 1974 in Roanoke, Virginia. Both are buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Cynthia Kent Burress (Dolvin), daughter of Withers & Virginia Burress, was born in1923. She married Welborn (Tom) Griffin Dolvin at Fort Benning, Ga in 1949. He was a graduate of West Point, a Lt. General in the US Army and the recipient of three Purple Hearts as well as three Distinguished Service Medals. He died on May 17, 1991 in Stevensville, Va and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Lucius Henry Chappell, Jr., son of Lucius & Cynthia Chappell, was born February 20, 1905, Columbus, Ga. He graduated from the US Naval Academy and served in WW II, where he received the Navy Cross and the Legion of Merit. He married Phyllis Constance White in 1931. He retired as a Rear Admiral, US Navy and died on December 10, 1980 in Palo Alto, California.

Cynthia Hart Chappell (Birdsey), daughter of Lucius & Cynthia Chappell, was born October 3, 1907, Columbus, Ga. She married Herbert Ford Birdsey on November 6, 1935. He died on April 28, 1977. She died on January 24, 1984. Both are buried at Riverside Cemetery in Macon, Georgia.

John Lamar Chappell, son of Lucius & Cynthia Chappell, was born February 20, 1910, Columbus, Georgia, where he died on November 8, 1915. He is buried at Linwood Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia.

Florence Weldon Hart (Sibley), daughter of William & Lucy Hart, was born September 1, 1875, Pulaski County, Virginia. She married Judge Samuel Hale Sibley on April 29, 1897 at Union Point, Georgia. Judge Sibley was so popular in Union Point that he was elected to the Georgia Legislature without spending a cent on campaigning. Later President Woodrow Wilson appointed him as Chief Justice for the United States Court of Appeals, 5th Circuit, where he served until his death on October 4, 1958 in Marietta, Ga. Florence died on November 17, 1941 also in Marietta, where they are both buried.

William Hart Sibley, son of Judge Samuel & Florence Sibley, was born August 4, 1898, Union Point, Ga. He attended the University of George and Harvard University. He married Patricia Wilson on August 14,1929, The family lived in Augusta, Georgia where he died on September 2, 1972. His wife also died in Augusta on August 18, 2007.They are buried at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia.

William Hart Sibley Jr., son of William & Patricia Sibley, was born September 29, 1933. He died in 1955 in Brooklyn, NY, while serving in the US Navy.

Samuel Hale Sibley II, son of William & Patricia Sibley, was born December 24, 1935, Atlanta, Ga. He married Martha Amanda Poer. He was the founder of the Hale Foundation and died on March 5, 2006 in Augusta, Georgia.

Lucy Bentley Sibley, daughter of Judge Samuel & Florence Sibley, was born and died on June 22, 1900 in Union Point, Georgia.

Sarah Virginia Sibley (Fleming), daughter of Judge Samuel & Florence Sibley, was born August 9, 1901, Union Point, Ga. She attended the Lucy Cobb Institute in Athens, Georgia and married William Cornelius Fleming on April 20, 1929 in Marietta, Ga. He was an attorney in Augusta, Ga. where the family lived. He died in 1971. She died on June 19, 1980 also in Augusta, Georgia.

Dr. William Henry Fleming II, son of William & Sarah Fleming, was born March 27, 1930, Augusta, Ga. He married Martha Boardman on April 20, 1954 in Augusta. Martha was a noted chef and author of The Grits Tree, a popular cooking book. Dr. Fleming died on November 4, 1965 in New Haven, Ct. His wife died on October 29, 2008 in Augusta, Georgia.

Samuel Hale Sibley Fleming, son of William & Sarah Fleming, was born July 15, 1934, Augusta, Ga. He married Nancy Lovelace West on November 29, 1958 and died on September 18, 1980 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Florence Weldon Sibley, daughter of Judge Samuel & Florence Sibley, was born August 20, 1906, Union Point, Ga. She attended Hollins College in Virginia and the University of Georgia. In 1936 she became the first professional librarian in the Cobb County, Ga Public Library System and remained there until her retirement in 1968. As a member of a prominent family, most of her salary was donated to the library. In 1965 a branch of the Cobb County Library was named Sibley Library in her honor. Florence died on April 8, 1982 and is buried at Magnolia Cemetery in Augusta, Georgia.

Mary Nicholson Hart, daughter of William & Lucy Hart, was born January 18, 1878, Pulaski County, Va, where she died on February 5, 1878.

William Thomas Hart, son of William & Lucy Hart, was born July 12, 1880, Pulaski County, Va. He married Mary Elmira (Mira) Bullard on January 21, 1909 and died on April 17, 1931 in Columbus, Georgia. She died on March 16, 1977. They are buried at Linwood Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia.

Louise Blackmar Hart (Hunt), daughter of William & Mira Hart, was born January 27, 1911, Columbus, Ga. She graduated from Vassar College, was a Special Attorney for the Justice Department, a member of the Georgia Bar Association and a poet of note. In 1938 she married Henry Goodfellow Hunt, Jr., an architectural consultant. The family lived in Hartford, Ct. Louise died on September 3, 1987 in Middletown, Connecticut. Her husband died on December 31, 1997 in Arlington, Virginia. Mary Kent Hart (Brumby), daughter of William & Mira Hart, was born July 22, 1914, Columbus, Ga. She married Sewell Marion Brumby in September of 1935. Her husband was a graduate of West Point and served in the US Army during WW II. The family lived in the Philippines and Japan until Colonel Brumby retired in the late 1950’s to Athens, Georgia, where he died on March 14, 1992. Mary also died in Athens on June 15, 2011. They are buried at Oconee Cemetery in Athens, Georgia.

William Bullard Hart, son of William & Mira Hart, was born January 22, 1918, Columbus, Ga. He married Sarah Rawson Smith on June 7, 1948. The family lived in Columbus, Georgia, where she died on February 18, 1982. He died on October 7, 1985. They are buried at Park Hill Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia.
